I'm someone who believes in getting a little better every day — not in a performative way, but as a real practice. Every morning, it pulls my meeting transcripts, Slack messages, and doc comments from the day before. Analyzes everything against frameworks from Marshall Goldsmith, Marty Cagan, Nancy Duarte, and others. Then gives me a brutally honest daily brief every morning on slack. What I did well. Where I fell short. Patterns I can't see because I'm too close to my own behavior. No sugarcoating. Here's the thing — as leaders, we build feedback loops for everyone else. Sprint retros. Performance reviews. 360s. But rarely for ourselves. I wanted to change that. A system that holds me accountable to showing up better for my team, my stakeholders, my customers. Not quarterly. Daily. Sandeep Thakur shared thisA dear friend — sharp PM, strong track record — told me context-switching was killing his productivity. That sparked a conversation that completely shifted his thinking. In an AI world, you're not doing one task at a time. You're kicking off an agent to draft a competitive analysis. While it runs, you're reviewing AI-summarized customer calls. While those render, you're pulling market data into a strategy doc you requested 20 minutes ago. But AI generating Product Requirements in 5 minutes doesn't mean you're done. Does it capture the right problem? Does the prioritization hold up when your CPO asks "why this, why now?" Your focus now goes to judging the work, not producing it. And focus didn't disappear — it got restructured. Instead of four uninterrupted hours on one deliverable, you're doing focused 30-minute deep dives into each AI output, stress-testing assumptions, then rotating. The concentration is real — just distributed in shorter, intentional bursts. The old enemy was reactive context-switching — getting yanked between Slack and a half-written doc. What wins now is deliberate orchestration — running multiple AI workstreams and rotating your judgment on your terms. For a while, I’d been procrastinating on how to better support my son’s reading skills, waiting for a "perfect" moment that never came. Everything changed this weekend during a 20-minute delay at the dentist. I realized that if I’m using AI to transform productivity at work, I should be using it to show up better as a parent. I pulled out my phone and started vibe coding a "Reading Wizard" app right there in the waiting room. The heart of the app is the recording and analysis engine: I record my son reading custom-generated stories, and the AI instantly analyzes his fluency to provide supportive feedback and a tailored learning plan for the following week. It’s all wrapped in a gamified badge system which he really loves. What was unimaginable a year ago is now a afternoon project. To my fellow parents: AI isn't just for the boardroom; it’s our best tool for reclaiming time and building custom solutions for the people who matter most. Looking back, the biggest lessons weren’t just in strategy, finance, or marketing—they were in hustle, resilience, and grit. IIM-Ahmedabad taught me how to thrive under pressure, push through ambiguity, and keep moving forward no matter the challenge. Looking back, I’m grateful for the "front-row seat" as the ServiceNow rocketship scaled from ~$3B to ~$14B. Between the Legal, Healthcare and HR product lines, I had the rare opportunity to lead both 0->1 and at-scale businesses -- while building both AI-native and AI-enhanced products. Feb 9 → 20 years of stated vs. revealed preference. They weren’t building a chatbot. They were building a Civilizational OS. Feb 19 → Bloomberg called Tim Cook late on AI. Wrong instrument. Wrong yardstick. Mar 13 → HealthKit 2014. ResearchKit 2015. CareKit 2016. The thesis started 12 years ago. May 11 → Mac Silicon supply-constrained from local AI workloads. Big Tech: $700B capex race. Sandeep Thakur liked thisMy engineers hit 96% survey participation. That meant I owed them a full day in my life as CTO video. Context: We run two engagement surveys a year at Checkr. The data only gets useful when we slice it by office, seniority, location, and team. That means we need near-complete participation, or the samples get too small to trust. Getting people to actually fill these out is harder than it sounds, so we turned it into a competition. First team to finish wins. And at certain thresholds, leaders agreed to take on some level of public embarrassment as the reward. It worked. Most functions landed around 80-85%. We hit 96%. So I filmed a day in my life. Unsurprisingly, it confirmed that I spend most of my day in meetings. I actually think that kind of content matters more than most leaders realize. You can write values on a wall but it doesn't tell people what it actually feels like to work here. A behind-the-scenes day does.

I chose Lehman Brothers. 150 years old, global reputation, the kind of name that made people nod when you said it. Then September 2008 happened. As a young professional just a few months into my career, I remember the fear and uncertainty. A company I thought would be around forever had collapsed almost overnight. What followed surprised me. Within days, competitors were already at the door — Lehman was known for its talent, and everyone wanted a piece of that pool. I received an offer from another firm. I had a clean exit. But then Nomura stepped in, acquired the division, and gave many of us the opportunity to continue. I chose to stay and be part of that transition. That experience taught me something I've carried since: Institutions can fall/ fail you overnight. Good people get picked up just as fast. Your reputation, your judgment, your ability to deliver — those travel with you regardless of what name is on the door. In 2026, we're watching a different kind of collapse unfold. AI disruption. Restructuring. Layoffs across finance, tech, supply chain. The fear is real. But Lehman taught me this: What survives every crisis: Your reputation — The work you've done quietly. The problems you've solved. The people you've helped. They remember. Your skills — Specific, transferable, proven. Not the title on your badge. Your belief in yourself — When doubt creeps in, remember: your value wasn't created by the company. Don't let it disappear with the company. Stay humble in the wins. Stay strong in the losses. Sandeep Thakur reacted on thisSandeep Thakur reacted on thisYesterday, I had the chance to host a Marketplace Risk panel on a topic I care deeply about: How do we spot hidden risk before it becomes a bigger problem? 👀 What I love about conversations like this is that they create space to tell the stories of our biggest customers while also giving people practical steps they can take back into their business right away. Because trust cannot just be a value statement. It has to show up in the systems you build, the questions you ask, and the assumptions you are willing to challenge. A few takeaways people can start putting into practice on Monday: 1) Audit the assumptions in your process Where are you relying on “this is how we’ve always done it”? Fraud often hides in the gaps between process steps, not inside one single tool. 2) Ask what your verification actually confirms A clean result does not always mean zero risk. It may simply mean nothing was found in the sources checked. That distinction matters. 2) Treat trust as an ongoing program Onboarding is not the finish line. People change. Risk changes. If you’re a first-time founder, there’s one ritual you can’t afford to ignore. Every day at 5 PM, Srinath and Matt at Regie.ai sit together for an hour with a cup of coffee and no agenda. It's space to surface whatever's bubbling up. They started this habit in the early days and kept to it. Databricks did weekly dinners for years with all five co-founders. Sometimes work-focused, but not always. Their goal was the same: create room for what isn't being said. Most founders talk constantly - in Slack, in standups, in product reviews. But those conversations are too transactional, too focused on output. You need unstructured time and the permission to say the uncomfortable thing. Room to address what's wrong before it becomes unsolvable. This is a powerful way to prevent a silent breakdown between leaders. As a startup grows, even the most amiable founders develop differences. With added responsibility and pressure, these differences turn into conflicts. A one-hour ritual can prevent that. My recommendation: Block the time, and keep it sacred. Founder fallout kills more startups than product missteps. If an hour a day - or a dinner a week - keeps that bond intact, why wouldn’t you make it non-negotiable?

Promotion season is upon us, and my latest article in The Times Of India discusses what really influences promotion decisions. Promotion decisions are rarely as straightforward as they appear. The process is more human, and more imperfect, than most people imagine. Performance matters, but it is only one variable among several. Promotion decisions are also shaped by other factors including budgets, role availability, team balance, succession planning, and timing. Two equally capable professionals may find themselves competing for one role, or waiting simply because the organisation has limited room to move. Yet appraisal season feels exceptionally personal. It is when professionals might behave slightly differently. They check their email more often. They replay conversations from six months ago. They search for clues in tone, in body language, in offhand remarks. Promotion season has a way of stirring up old self-doubt. Comparison sharpens. We look sideways at peers who joined with us, measuring trajectories. We remember who received stretch assignments and who was visible in the right forums. Even seasoned leaders can feel an unexpected tightening in the chest while waiting for that appraisal conversation. Promotion meetings assess readiness for a specific role at a specific moment within a particular organisational context. They measure performance against defined expectations. They do not measure the full arc of a career. Character, resilience, judgment under pressure, and the capacity to grow - these qualities determine where a career eventually ends up. It is worth asking yourself: ▪️If I was promoted, how will I use this opportunity? ▪️If not, what needs to change? Is it my approach, or my environment? ▪️Am I interpreting this decision as a reflection of my capability, or of the context I am in? ▪️What aspects of my growth are within my control, regardless of timing? ▪️Am I allowing a moment in time to define my longer-term trajectory? Organisations decide promotions, but the meaning you attach to that decision is yours. #beyondtheplaybook #leadership #promotion
