Meanwhile, solar was responsible for 3/4 of the net increase in overall electricity generation (again, not just capacity) globally. I am fortunate to have worked alongside Charlotte Beard and Kristen Ilgenstein to grow our finance & accounting team from 2 to 30+ exceptionally talented colleagues. Over this time, we stood-up a battery factory in West Virginia, raised over $1.5B in funding, got a world-changing battery technology to market, and built the finance engine to enable the next phase of scale-up. It’s an exciting time for Form, and I can't wait to see what comes next. I am deeply grateful to Charlotte for her generous mentorship, Mateo Jaramillo for the opportunity, and the Form executive team and investors for being wonderful partners. Most of all, thank you to my dedicated and talented team. I have learned so much from each of one of you. We accomplished a lot together. As for what's next - I'm taking a few months to recharge and reconnect with friends & colleagues before jumping back in. I leave Form feeling emboldened, and am more optimistic than ever about the future of energy.

Shayle Kann liked thisA great episode of Catalyst, one of the clearest supply-side maps I've seen of the AI power scramble. Jeremie Eliahou Ontiveros and Shayle Kann on the tiering of behind-the-meter generation (aeroderivatives, reciprocating engines, fuel cells), the shift from self-build to leasing, and Google's backstop-and-TPU flywheel with Anthropic. What stayed with me is that the through-line is financial, not physical. So much of what they describe (credit profiles, investment grade, backstops, binding versus non-binding contracts, ballooning interconnection deposits) comes down to who can underwrite the commitment, not who can pour the concrete. Demand-side flexibility also never came up, and it sits on the sidelines for the same reason clean firm does here: the contract and financing layer hasn't been built. The market's current answer (bilateral, behind-the-meter, deal-by-deal) buys speed at the cost of durability. It works unless/until cost allocation, community acceptance, capacity markets, or permitting catch up.

Utility regulators dive into power markets in game-based workshop Some 30 staff members of the California Public Utilities Commission immersed themselves in California’s critical day-ahead electricity market in a game-based workshop with the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies’s Program on Energy & Sustainable Development. Day-ahead markets allow electricity to be traded before actual delivery, helping optimize energy dispatch and integrate renewable sources like intermittent wind and solar power. The regulators learned how these markets function and their benefits for grid reliability in a two-day workshop in part by playing PESD's "Energy Market Game." Led by Mark Thurber, CPUC staff experienced how day-ahead markets enable better forecasting, facilitate renewable energy integration, and improve real-time market efficiency. Participants also completed PESD e-learning modules beforehand. The workshop included an interactive module exploring how day-ahead markets help power plant operators optimize scheduling decisions, ultimately demonstrating these markets' value for California's clean energy transition. This workshop concluded a broader initiative in which PESD delivered a series of five courses to staff across the CPUC. PGE Energizes 475 MW of Battery Energy Storage to Boost Grid Reliability and Keep Costs Low for Oregonians Portland General Electric (PGE) has energized three new utility-scale battery energy storage systems, adding 475 MW and over 1.9 GWh of dispatchable capacity to serve the Portland metro area. These systems can power about 300,000 homes for four hours during peak demand or grid interruptions, providing flexibility and backup capacity to enhance reliability for PGE customers. The facilities, located at key substations in North Portland, Troutdale, and Hillsboro, use four-hour lithium-ion batteries integrated into PGE’s grid to help balance electricity production and consumption. This reduces reliance on costly short-term electricity purchases, stabilizes energy costs, limits price volatility, and supports the integration of renewable sources like wind and solar. Two of the facilities, Seaside (200 MW) and Sundial (200 MW), were developed by Eolian, L.P., with Seaside delivered under a Build-Transfer Agreement and Sundial operated by NextEra Energy Resources under a 20-year agreement. The third facility, Constable (75 MW), is PGE-owned and was built under a construction agreement with Mortenson. All three facilities achieved commercial operation between December 2024 and July 2025. In addition to these, PGE completed the 17 MW Coffee Creek Battery Storage near Wilsonville in 2024, bringing PGE’s total large-scale battery storage capacity to 492 MW. PGE highlights that these battery systems improve the use of existing transmission infrastructure, avoiding costly grid upgrades and supporting low-cost load growth. PGE serves over 950,000 customers in Oregon and is committed to clean energy, aiming to reduce retail power supply emissions by 80% by 2030 and 100% by 2040. Solar panel industry accelerates shift away from silver as costs soar. (Reuters.com) "Solar panel producers are intensifying efforts to replace silver with alternatives such as copper after silver rallied 130% over the past year, squeezing margins already under pressure from production overcapacity, particularly in China, industry experts said. "Silver is the greatest contributor to the increased cost of manufacturing solar panels," said Derek Schnee, senior commercial solar consultant at JK Renewables, adding that the cost of solar panels has increased 7-15% over the last 12 months." "Silver paste, a key material for photovoltaic panels, makes up 30% of total solar cell costs, Heraeus analysts noted. After a 147% rally in 2025, silver prices touched an all-time high of $121.64 an ounce in January amid tight physical supply and retail-driven buying, before easing to $77 an ounce. The photovoltaic sector accounts for 196 million troy ounces, or 17%, of total silver demand, which is also driven by jewellery, electronics, and investment uses." "In the U.S., silver paste costs per 450-watt module have increased from roughly $5.22 in early 2025 to about $17.65 ," said Ben Damiani, Chief Technology Officer at renewable power company Cherry Street Energy. With silver fetching $2.5 million per metric ton, solar manufacturers' shift is accelerating towards alternatives such as copper, which was last trading at $12,823 per ton. With California’s utility rates projected to continue rising, #solar remains an attractive long-term investment and proven strategy for public agencies looking to manage #energy costs, meet #sustainability mandates, and demonstrate forward-thinking leadership. The rapidly shifting state and federal policy landscape underscores the continued importance of strategic solar development. The reality is while #OBBBA will not stop solar deployment in California, it will make projects far less #economical than they are right now. “React to things changing instead of waiting for them to change on you,” Dan Smith, VP Markets at DSD advised. Public agencies should act quickly to determine project feasibility and a development strategy that takes full advantage of the #IRA’s previously provisioned tax credits. Programs like SPURR Joint Powers Authority’s REAP Program provide a critical resource, offering pre-negotiated contracts and feasibility studies that can help public agencies navigate this transition and secure solar projects before the tax credit window closes. The solar landscape is undoubtedly complex, but not unnavigable. Public agencies that approach solar strategically, with expert guidance and thorough analysis, can still achieve significant long-term value.

💧⚡ Calistoga’s Hydrogen-Powered Microgrid: Resilience Without Onsite Emissions 🌲🔥 The Napa Valley town of Calistoga has unveiled a first-of-its-kind hydrogen-powered microgrid to keep lights on during wildfire-related grid shutdowns, replacing noisy diesel generators with a compact system combining lithium-ion batteries and liquid hydrogen fuel cells. Built by Energy Vault for PG&E, the facility can deliver up to 8.5 MW for 48 hours, with refueling capability for extended outages. Central to the design is an 80,000-gallon liquid hydrogen tank feeding six Plug Power fuel cells, paired with batteries for black-start capability and output smoothing. Why it matters: Wildfire-driven power cuts are a growing threat across California, and communities need multi-day, emissions-free backup in small footprints. Calistoga’s solution proves hydrogen can provide high-density storage for emergencies, without local air pollution, while reclaiming public spaces once occupied by diesel units. But the project also highlights a critical gap: most of today’s hydrogen supply chain is still carbon-intensive, relying on methane or electrolysis powered by fossil-heavy grids.
