We don't do it for the criticism. We do it because we love the game, and part of the game is the love of seeing others win. Why do you do it? 🙏📈 Anthony Zhang שיתף את זהThe moment you step into leadership, you step into the arena. And nobody warns you what that actually means. You're going to get criticized by people who've never built anything. You're going to make decisions with incomplete information while everyone waits to judge the outcome. You're going to have your worst moments magnified and your best moments minimized. That's the deal. When you're scaling a company, everything gets amplified. Miss a quarter? Everyone has an opinion. Make a tough call on headcount? You're the villain. Take a risk that doesn't pan out? "I told you so" from the cheap seats. The doubt creeps in at 2am when you're questioning every decision. The hate shows up in your inbox, your comments, your board meetings. The magnifying glass follows you everywhere. Every stumble is public. Every failure is analyzed by people who've never had to make the call. But here's what I've learned after years of building teams and scaling orgs: The critics don't matter. Not because criticism isn't valid sometimes. But because the people throwing stones have never been in the fight. They've never had to look a team in the eye after a bad quarter. They've never had to bet their reputation on an unproven strategy. They've never felt the weight of 50, 100, 200 people depending on their decisions. You will fail. You will doubt yourself. You will want to quit. That's not weakness. That's the cost of actually doing something that matters. The only people whose opinions count are the ones who've been bloodied in their own arena. Everyone else is just spectating. So if you're in the fight right now, if you're taking the hits, if you're doubting whether you're cut out for this… Keep going. The arena is brutal. 📈 Anthony Zhang פרסם/פרסמה את זהTo those who are looking to break into sales... Or maybe you've been in sales for some time but want to get into the tech (B2B SaaS) industry... The one piece of advice that I give to all my mentees and clients is this: Treat each job you get as a paid MBA towards your career goals. Don't go searching for your "perfect" dream job. It doesn't exist yet. Go look for the environment that will give you the most support, coaching, feedback, and practice. The goal is to use this time to learn as much as you possibly can from incredible leaders and teammates. Hopefully at a place that supports your cost of living. Focus on the processes. Practice the talk tracks. Understand the frameworks. ▪️ Deal & Demo mechanics ▪️ Pipeline management ▪️ Cold calling ▪️ Sequencing & follow ups etc... Learn how to utilize common CRMs like Salesforce or Hubspot. Ask lots of questions. Even the dumb ones... Especially the dumb ones. Choose gratitude & grit over entitlement. Be the best damn (insert role) on the team. And give it your 200%. That dream job that you're hoping for? That becomes the result of all your efforts. It'll be within reach before you know it. 📈 Anthony Zhang פרסם/פרסמה את זהBeen thinking about the state of the SDR role lately... I'm hearing folks say that being an SDR is harder than ever... I'm hearing doubt about the SDR role, specifically with the recent announcement of Salesloft (my old stomping grounds) removing their SDR department. Seems like a quite a bit of fear and doubt in the space right now concerning the role. Talks of full cycle AEs being more effective and profitable. I don't know... Maybe it's all true, maybe it's not... Maybe it's all based on perspective and/or how your business is ran. For me, I will always die on the hill of having an SDR team. Here's why: Ever since starting my SDR journey at Pardot, Outbound has always been a puzzle to be solved... like an Escape Room. I like to think of each piece of the SDR process as a "key" to unlocking a better chance at earning the meeting. Things like: ‣ Tonality & Confidence ‣ Preliminary Research ‣ Context/Relevance in your opener ‣ Industry Knowledge ‣ Targeted Discovery ‣ Email Subject Line ‣ All the components of writing an effective cold email (too long to list here) ‣ Persistence & follow-up ‣ Objection Handling ‣ Intentional Structure & Process; what email to send, when to send it, when to call, how many touches, for how long, etc... (what we know today as a cadence or sequence) ... and so much more... These were all executed, conducted, trained on, practiced without automation or AI. I think we're gotten to the point where automation and AI has created laziness and insincerity in the Outbound process. Generic scripts. Email blasts. AI-written templates. Robo-SDRs... We've turned the thoughtful nature of the "Escape Room" into a "Bullet Train" - simply trying to get to our destination as quickly as possible, regardless of authenticity or sincerity. So of course the SDR role is going to become harder. Because the old was are obsolete. But the new ways are creating too much noise, leading to email fatigue, unknown number safeguards, and more spam traps than ever before. In my opinion, the best, most effective SDR teams won't see this as a deterrent. They'll see this as a new puzzle to be solved. The overall purpose of the SDR role won't be replaced. Not yet, anyway. But it has to evolve and adapt to the "new age" that we're in. What do you think?

A highly skilled sales professional will almost always outperform against an "industry expert". You may need a "technical closer" to help support the reps, at times. But an experienced sales professional knows how to ask the right discovery questions to uncover need & pain. An experienced sales professional knows how to effectively handle objections and turn those objections into opportunities to go into deeper discovery or reinforce value. An experienced sales professional knows how to manage methodical sales processes & their pipeline, not just talk about the product. An experienced sales professional can quickly learn about the industry that they're selling into. And it's far easier to teach sales reps about the industry than it is to get an industry expert proficient in sales. Change my mind. #sales #soapbox #hiring #recruiting

However, there's also a downside. You stop noticing all of the obvious things that need changing, improving, and removing. 🤢 When I first start with a company, and when I bring new team members into the company, I tell them about the 'ugly green lamp' and ask them to let me know if they see one. The 'ugly green lamp' is a metaphor - when you walk into someone's house for the first time you see this ugly green lamp, and you think 'man, that green lamp is ugly'. The homeowner doesn't see it as ugly, because they get so used to it, and they forget it's there. It might have a back story, but they have become accustomed to it, accept it, and don't change it, because "it's always been that way". 💡 I have two ugly green lamps I'm trying to replace right now. And I mean REALLY ugly. You'd shudder if I told you. The ugly green lamp is such an important concept to embrace. Ask everyone to find the lamp in your team or company. A process, a system, a feature, a custom or behaviour, something that just doesn't make sense, and critically analyse if there isn't a better way. This becomes especially important as you're doing quarterly or annual planning. You can't get sentimental and protective over the ugly green lamps. Change them.

We would never have been able to hire our most talented people like Ally Saylor (New York) and Jess Cook (Michigan) if we weren't. We're not forcing them back to an office. But over the last year, something incredible happened: - We grew 912% in 2025 - Our EPD team started to centralize in Boston - We started making a real dent in disrupting legacy ABM providers I knew we had something special so decided it was time to go all in and relocate to Boston (starting with the summer, for now). And the timing couldn't be better: over the next 3 months, we're launching some of the most disruptive features in the space! And I couldn't be more excited to be in person, feeling the energy. And instead of piling on more complexity, we’re trying to simplify how legal actually works. We’re focused on where legal work really begins - intake. Helping teams cut through the noise, get to the right answers faster, and make legal easier for the rest of the business to engage with. No forcing people to “learn legal.” Just better systems that actually make sense. What really makes this moment special, though, is the people. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to grow alongside so many talented people, help build something special, and be part of a journey that shaped me both professionally and personally. Not many AEs get to see a company evolve from seed funding to unicorn status. The milestones - 2,000+ closed-won deals and five President’s Club appearances — matter, but what I’ll carry forward most are the relationships. Stax gave me lifelong friendships. I’ve attended six Stax weddings (seven if you count my own), and even had our founder, Sal Rehmetullah , officiate mine — memories I’ll always be thankful for. Stax was the first place that truly believed in me, and because of that belief, I flourished.
