Liberty Fellowship is affiliated with the Aspen Global Leadership Network, and each cycle it seats a class of 21 South Carolinians to think seriously about the future of our state. Education, economic mobility, healthcare, justice, the rural and urban divide, the long shadow of history. The things that actually shape people’s lives. You don’t apply. You’re nominated. The program looks for leaders at what they call an inflection point, people with a record of civic and community engagement who are ready to take on a broader role. Reading that criteria honestly, I sat with it for a while. It’s a generous description of where I am, and I plan to earn it. I’m a kid from Greenville who went to Claflin University, who is finishing a doctorate at Jackson State, and who has spent a career working across more than 35 states with campaigns, advocacy organizations, and communities trying to change conditions on the ground. Everything I know about leadership I learned from HBCUs, from organizers, from the young people I mentor, and from neighbors in places that political institutions usually forget. So this recognition is not really about me. It belongs to Claflin. It belongs to Jackson State. It belongs to every mentor, organizer, pastor, teacher, and elder who poured into me when I had nothing to offer in return. It belongs to the communities that taught me what service actually costs. I’m entering this fellowship as a student first. Nearly 2 years of seminars alongside leaders from business, healthcare, education, faith, and the nonprofit sector is a rare opportunity, and I plan to use it. The work I care about, on education, economic mobility, and the systems that determine who gets a fair shot in this state, demands that I keep sharpening how I think. Leadership without learning becomes performance, and I’m not interested in that version of it. The fellowship’s charge is to confront the status quo in South Carolina. I’m grateful to join this class of 21, and to step into a network of 330 Fellows already doing this work. I had the opportunity to participate in a panel this evening for the 2026 Blacks in Cybersecurity Mentoring Program, and it was truly a full-circle moment. As an alumna of the program, I was invited to share my journey. I talked about where I am in my cybersecurity career today and how this program played a pivotal role in shaping that path. Being able to reflect on that growth and speak candidly about my experience was both rewarding and energizing. Programs like this are critical in creating access, building confidence, and developing the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. I’m grateful to be part of a community that continues to uplift and invest in one another.
