A big thank you to Amy Miller and the PRAGMA team for organising an insightful AI workshop in Aberdeen and for the invitation to take part. The session was an excellent reminder of how much opportunity exists when we focus on practical AI for Operations and Production, as a set of tools that improve efficiency, safety, and day-to-day decision making. Common agreement between participants: - AI is no longer experimental. Across the sector, tools such as intelligent document systems, machine-learning-driven monitoring and visual understanding models are already delivering measurable impact when applied to real operational challenges. - Start small but be ambitious. The strongest examples showed that beginning with a well-defined use case, whether interpreting engineering drawings or improving emissions monitoring (the examples discussed), creates fast wins, builds organisational trust and sets the foundation for effective scaling. Focused deployments help teams build clarity and scale. - Continuous, integrated monitoring is transforming operations. With the maturity of edge computing, along with enterprise-grade cybersecurity, we now have the infrastructure to process data safely at source and deliver real-time operational intelligence. This shift enables earlier intervention, better maintenance planning and a more proactive approach to asset performance. - Adoption requires strong change management. Technology alone does not create transformation. Teams need the time, support and confidence to experiment. Upskilling, coaching and clear governance are essential. The human and AI collaboration model, where technology accelerates analysis and people provide judgement, remains the most effective approach. The takeaway for me is clear: the future of production and operations will belong to organisations that combine domain expertise, scalable and safe AI and thoughtful change management.
