About us
Founded at the end of the Second World War, the United Nations is an international organization made up of 193 Member States committed to maintaining international peace and security. Every day the UN works to tackle global challenges and deliver results for those most in need. Giving life-saving support to populations hit by humanitarian crises, helping build and keep the peace in conflict-ridden areas, supporting governments and their citizens to advance development and fight poverty, and promoting human rights worldwide are the core pillars of the work of the United Nations and the mandates it receives from its Member States. Wednesday is World Youth Skills Day. As our world is being reshaped by digital technologies, climate change and growing economic uncertainty and inequality, navigating these rapid changes requires a new set of skills — from digital literacy and artificial intelligence to communication and critical thinking, says UN Secretary-General António Guterres. “Unlocking the full potential of younger generations requires massive investment in inclusive quality education and training. Closing the skills gap can help create decent jobs and sustainable livelihoods at scale.” On Youth Skills Day and every day, let's commit to equipping young people with the skills they need to build a better future for all. Seeking asylum is a fundamental human right for people fleeing violence, persecution, war or disaster. It offers people the opportunity to rebuild their lives and contribute to societies with dignity by opening up access to healthcare, education, shelter, employment and more.
