Ramatu Kandakai, MBA shared thisPeople romanticize entrepreneurship. They talk about leaving the 9 to 5 like it is the moment everything gets lighter. No more waiting for a promotion, office politics, shrinking your ideas. But what happens when you leave the ladder and realize you are still carrying the weight? The instability, unpaid labor, loneliness, lack of capital. And the added pressure to build credibility without an institutional name or big brand behind you. Leaving a company does not always mean leaving the system. Sometimes it means facing the same barriers without the paycheck, benefits, team, or structure that used to soften them. In the latest edition of Beyond the Ladder, I unpack the real cost of betting on yourself, why Black women are leading the entrepreneurial boom, how AI is fueling the current entrepreneurship revival, and why personal branding becomes infrastructure when the path is no longer linear. Entrepreneurship can be freeing, But it is not free. So the question is: are we preparing people to bet on themselves, or just romanticizing the escape?Betting on Yourself: What Leaving the Ladder Actually CostsBetting on Yourself: What Leaving the Ladder Actually CostsRamatu Kandakai, MBA

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA shared thisDay 5 + last day in France Surviving my 1st Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity TL;DR: Slept in, walked the empty Croisette, met Ling and Lamb, enjoyed Antibes, and networked all the way to my flight. How the day started... By this point my body said, "you've got to be kidding me if you think you're getting out of bed."So I got 7 hours of sleep and missed the last morning events. I met up with Allegra W., and we walked the Croisette and grabbed ice cream. The Croisette felt like a dead zone. It was like showing up to a party late after the fun already happened. Most people were in group chats talking about traffic, canceled flights, and having to stay another day. We went to the LBB (Little Black Book) & Friends happy hour. There I met up with more folks including Nina Archie and went to the beach. Side note: I somehow left my The Female Quotient Quotient flip flops there, and I am still sad about it. If there are any extras, I will be at WBMBA All Stars at The Female Quotient and would love another pair! We went to La Môme ((Thanks for the recommendation, Kristina Corniel.) The restaurant was packed, the line was long, and they were turning people away without reservations. Somehow, Allegra W. got us in with no wait. While in line, I met the internet duo Ling and Lamb! I was fan girling because their content brings me so much joy, and they were just as warm in person. Dinner was amazing and energizing. They were singing, clapping, flickering the lights, and the whole place felt like a must-do Cannes experience. Nighttime: We passed by the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity closing ceremony, then made our way to the Martinez Hotel lounge area to close out the night. The next day, I slept in, enjoyed the hotel pool, and explored the beach town thanks to Nina Archie and Dee. Even though the festival was technically over, I still met people in town from Cannes, including Janjay Sherman, Jason Keehn, and Ugi Ugwuomo. We reminisced about the week and what the experience meant. For my last dinner in Antibes, I ate at Le Phénicia, Cuisine Moderne Libanaise, with Allegra W., Nina Archie, and Renee King. Then Sunday came, and it was finally time to leave. Even in the luggage line, Cannes was still Cannes. I had the most amazing conversation about brand experiences with Marie-Élaine Lemire, who shared her podcast Sightlinelive and the incredible conversations she had during the festival. A reminder that the conference does not end when the panels stop. Lessons from both days: 1. Never stop networking. You would be surprised who you connect with on your way out. 2. Enjoy the moment. Conferences bring you to new places, so make time to experience the city too. 3. Build in time to rest and reset before the journey home. You never know what delays can happen, and being fueled is a gift. #Cannes2026

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA shared thisWasn't the goal of becoming a content creator to escape the 9 to 5? Lately, I've been noticing creators are making their way back into the workforce, but not in the traditional sense. They are not just being hired to post. They are being brought into creative direction, brand strategy, product feedback, community building, and in some cases, the org chart itself. Lissette Calveiro shared a great post recently about what she calls Creator-First-Careers, and I think that language captures where this is headed. It is not about creators giving up independence. It is about creators working with companies in ways that preserve their voice, leverage their audience intelligence, and give them real influence inside the business. In the latest edition of Beyond the Ladder, I unpack this trend and what it means for creators, brands, and the future of work. Because the next phase of the creator economy is not just about who gets paid to post. It is about who gets invited to shape the business. From Brand Faces to Business Functions: Why brands are bringing creators into the org chartFrom Brand Faces to Business Functions: Why brands are bringing creators into the org chartRamatu Kandakai, MBA

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA shared thisDay 4 Surviving my 1st Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity TL;DR: Explored activations on the Croisette, met the ultimate hype man Flava Flav, yacht hopped, and almost fell asleep in VIP. How the day started... After getting to bed at 5am, my body said I was missing that Salesforce brunch. By the time I got there, I explored the activation. Then at The Female Quotient (my favorite place at Cannes), was "The Hype Playbook: Celebrating Women Who Win," moderated by Christine Lane with Flava Flav, Olympian Hilary Knight, Rhiannon Rae Ellis, and Evin Shutt. I learned how Flav's support for women's sports evolved from a cultural moment to partnership (SHE Weekend). Biggest takeaway: real partnership is showing up, listening, investing, and being accountable. Then Brand Innovators for "Creativity That Performs" with Jess Kirkman, Tim Barnes, Gabrielle Heyman, Matt Krepsik, and Brandon Rochon. Brandon's energy was unmatched! He said AI can make us more proficient, but it cannot replace artistry. Next, I explored Canva's aactivation. From the ice cream, to Canva originals, it was the coolest activation (literally, temp wise). I listened to "Make It Matter," moderated by Bill Magnuson with Cliff Obrecht and Stephanie Mehta. Biggest takeaway: memorable brands create connection, earn trust, and make people care. Then the Pinterest Manifestival felt like a real-life Pinterest board with sensory moments, offline activities, and "Less URL, More IRL." I ran into Jasmine Clennon. We have known each other online for years and finally met IRL. Back at FQ, for "Collective Impact" with Vida M Cornelious, Kim Chappell, Allison Litzinger, Ashley Patterson, and Natalie Wills. I learned strong partnerships require both sides to give up some control and rigidity. I stayed for "Power Pair," moderated by thee Shelley Zalis with Ciara and Russell Wilson. What stood out was their love, faith, and how they build as a team. I caught "FQ CMO: The Power of Brand Trust" with Vanessa M. Buenger, Melissa Brotz, Jill Kramer, Lina Polimeni, and William White. Trust is built moment by moment through clarity, consistency, and intention. Then I made it to Linktree's happy hour. The venue gave Cannes French vibes. I met Flavilla Fongang, founder of Sixth Hive, and Debodun Osekita, aka the Stocks Guy. From there, Yacht Row for "AI on the Yacht" hosted by Ritual Ads®. Thank you Jethro R. for the invite. I met Andrew Rusk from Stanify, who blew my mind talking AI-powered community management. Leaving, I met Allegra W. and ended up at another yacht event. Nighttime: Culture House's "We Love Creators" appreciation party with Nnenna Ikoro before Jerk & Jollof. I was honestly falling asleep in VIP, so it was time to go. Today's Tips: 1) Be okay with pivoting. A missed event can still lead to a better plan. 2) Mazimize your experience beyond just panels, experice the activations. 3) Know when to call it and go home. Conferences are a marathon. #Cannes2026

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA reposted thisRamatu Kandakai, MBA reposted thisThe electricity went out, but it was electric ⚡️ I was on stage at FQ Beach with Keke Palmer when we suddenly lost power. So we grabbed a megaphone, and Keke did what Keke does best. She turned an unexpected moment into one no one will forget, singing and dancing with the crowd until the power came back on. It was such a special reminder that the best moments are rarely the ones you plan. They're the ones where a community comes together, embraces the unexpected, and turns what could have been a setback, into something even better. #CannesLions2026

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA shared thisDay 3 Surviving my 1st Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity TL;DR: One of the best days of my life. I met Oprah Winfrey, Olandria Carthen, Ms. Tina Knowles, and Keke Palmer, followed by an epic VIP club experience. How the day started... I woke up late since my schedule was free, but a group chat text changed everything: "OPRAH is at The Female Quotient." I dashed into an Uber and caught most of "The Sound of Influence: A Very Special Conversation." Oprah had the room silent, speaking on purpose and intention. She said life starts as a whisper, but if you ignore it, it gets louder. I even got a picture with her and thanked her. I stayed for "Leading Through Change: Executive Presence in the AI Era," moderated by Caroline Giegerich with Gemini Babla, Jennifer Kattula, Sally Lee, Kara Puccinelli, and Cammy Keiler. While there, I ran into Jasper Hagan, who introduced me to Kendra G, and met Pauline Malcolm to talk branding. Then, I went to Microsoft Gardens for "The Power of Community: How Creators Build Influence That Moves Culture" with Willonius Hatcher, #KeithLee, and Olandria Carthen, moderated by Wildin' Pierrevil. Meeting Olandria afterward made me emotional. And she gave me the warmest hug! On the way out, I met Erin On Demand, and told her how she inspired me to start creating videos. Then at The Female Quotient caught "The New Influence: Power Beyond the Feed," moderated by Jacqueline Tsekouras with Mariana Antata, Andrea Gellert, Cat Gotze, Kay Tzu, and Claudia Navarro. Right after was Ms.Tina Knowles and Attica Jaques in "Tracing Roots, Crafting Legacy". She told me to keep documenting family stories because they matter. I stumbled into Variety's Brand Visionary Happy Hour with Will.i.am and Ramin Setoodeh. Followed by LinkedIn's Creator Experience, where Nina Nasre showed me the Adobe activation. I also met Ashlei A. Rodgers, MPH and Kiah Lawrence. Then at Chief's session, "Building the Workplace of the Future," I got a touch-up from OliviaDMakeup and heard Avery Akkineni interview Lara Hood Balazs and Alison Moore. Then back to The Female Quotient for 'Girls Night Out' with Keke Palmer, moderated by Shelley Zalis. The power went out, so Keke used a megaphone for karaoke! The panel covered confidence and recovery, and afterward, I told Keke how much I admire her longevity before snapping a picture. I finally linked up with Rah Ali and her team for dinner after connecting pre-Cannes. Nighttime: I met the artist Miguel and he said my name was beautiful. That night at the club so many celebrities shows up from Ciara and Russell Wilson, Janelle Monae, Jason Tayton, Jackie Aina, Olandria Carthen, Speedy Morman, Lala Milan, Anthony Ramos and more. Today's Tips: 1. Watch the group chats. The best moments aren't on your calendar. 2. Give flowers in real life. You never know when you'll get the chance again. 3. Stay present. Conferences reward the people who are ready for the moment. #cannes2026

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA shared thisDay 2 Surviving my 1st Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity TL;DR: Partying with Ciara and Russell Wilson was not on my 2026 bingo card, but anything can happen at Cannes. (pics inside) How the day started 2.5 hours of sleep and 10 minutes behind, but I made it to Meta Beach right on time for "Beauty and the Beach." Moderated by Ajaa Long, Jackie Aina and Brent Mitchell shared the creator/ retail sides of beauty partnerships. Biggest takeaway: nobody likes a hard sell, and creator content works best when it feels natural. I also met TikTok creator #BranFlakes and later gave him personal branding advice on expanding into content around his other passions. Then I headed to Sports Beach for Shaquille O'Neal, Lina Polimeni, and TJ Adeshola. Lunch at Cannes Can: Diversity Collective the Inkwell. s/o to ambassadors Aubrei Hayes, MPA & Anthony Williams II ✨. At event I also met Marcus McDowell, Danica Collins, MS, NBC-HWC, Jarrett Albritton, Brittany F., and missed Morgan DeBaun was in the room (epic fail!). At Sports Beach saw Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles with Sarah Spain, Joy Robins, and Blanca Juti. I also met the medical mythbuster Joel Bervell, MD and gave him his flowers. Then Brand Innovators for Chris Paul, Selina Sykes, Erin Silvoy, and Shane Dwyer on "Balancing Legacy with Future-Forward Brands." Canva for "Breaking Through in the Attention Economy" with Gabrielle Dallas Wesley, Todd Spangler, and William White. Then went to The Female Quotient for Carmelo Anthony and Asani Swann, MBA on VII(N) The Seventh Estate and building legacy. Best session: Tubi X TikTok: From Your Feed to Big Screen. It was a masterclass on bringing TikTok creator content to streaming with Kudzi Chikumbu, Dawn Yang, Kayla Cobb, Alex Maystrik, and Pablo Hernandez. At happy hour, I spoke with Kudzi Chikumbu,Eric Sedeño, Tyler Woods, and met Rachel Rodgers. We spoke about wealth, her upcoming book and haircare. Evening: LinkedIn's B2B event with Ray Saddiq, Glen Uwaila, Kameliya Galibardova, and Julia Cabral. FQ's Unwell party with Zuri Godfrey. Carlton sightings: Jeremiah (Love Island) and Kahlil Greene Green. In line for an event I did not get into, I met Jimmy Akingbola from Bel-Air. The night: I ended at the FQ party hosted by Ciara and Russell Wilson for Five to Nine with Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez, Alexis Ohanian Sr., Jaylen Brown, Taylor Rooks, Bozoma Saint John. I ran into Justin Diego & Ngozi I. Ahanotu and met Charnell Blizzard, Charita Coleman, and Ayan Ahmed, MBA at the party. So today's tips are: 1) Make sure to show up even if you are late. You would be surprised what value you can get in a few minutes. 2) Act like you belong in the room. I never thought in a million years I would be giving advice to content creators and actors. 3) Bring what you are learning into the conversation. The best convos happened when you reference a real takeaway. Ring the bell for daily Cannes updates. #Cannes2026

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA posted thisI've fallen behind my my Cannes daily recaps. Had to get a Beyond the Ladder article out today. If you haven't already check out my most recent edition on the Fractional or Consultant. I'll be sure to give updates tomorrow. Just know I am having a blast. Night 3 I attended a party hosted by a power couple. Can you guess who? #cannes2026

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA shared thisFractional work is starting to feel like a movement. I have watched several friends lose their jobs and turn years of leadership experience into fractional work. But many are still struggling to find consistent clients. That made me wonder: if the experience is there and the market is growing, what is missing? I spoke with Chareen Goodman - Authority Brand Strategist, who gave me one answer: A consultant recommends. A fractional leader owns. That distinction may seem small, but it changes how buyers understand your value and the level at which they are willing to hire you. I unpack this in my latest Beyond the Ladder article: "Fractional or Consultant: When the Label Is the Problem."Fractional or Consultant: When the Label Is the ProblemFractional or Consultant: When the Label Is the ProblemRamatu Kandakai, MBA

What better way to kick it off by moderating a conversation with TOGETHXR and The GIST on Storytelling for Today's Athlete. This won't be your average panel, this conversation will dig into the business side of media and how athletes can truly shift the mark for their success. Shoutout to Chicago Sports Tech for bringing me on to host!

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA liked thisRamatu Kandakai, MBA liked thisMilk spilled everywhere, no steamer, hail. Job still done right 💪✅ Audi came in for a full interior/exterior. Milk spilled down the passenger door and soaked into the panel — worse than what I could see from the driveway. So I repriced it before I started, not after. That conversation takes ten seconds and saves the whole job. My steamer died the day before. Entire thing done by hand. That’s the part a before/after clip never shows you. The work isn’t the hard part. Delivering when your equipment fails and the weather turns is the hard part — and it’s where the margin actually lives. “This is unbelievable,” (in a good way 😂) she said when I handed the keys back. Still figuring out how to build this business, so it doesn’t depend on me being the guy holding the towel! Connect with me to follow along the journey!

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA liked thisRamatu Kandakai, MBA liked thisOk I've held off on this long enough! A few weeks ago I sat down with the Brian Sozzi from Yahoo Finance and pitched him on HotSaus World — the platform rewarding the $500B in Zelle, Venmo, and Cash App payments to businesses. He got it. Now it's your turn. → Billions of dollars are moving through Zelle, Venmo, and Cash App every year and none of it earns you ONE reward or loyalty for that matter → Cashback (not discounts) is the move for small businesses now more than ever → Why I built HotSaus w/ Bam Faboyede in the first place This is the first video on our YouTube channel and I could not have asked for a better one to kick things off. Ramatu Kandakai, MBA liked thisRamatu Kandakai, MBA liked thisWhat are we doing here LinkedIn? Honestly. Not only is this post completely fictional but it appears to be a bot account. Yet, look at the engagement? And it was only posted a day ago? I am not mad to see other actual creators, thought leaders and writers on this platform get crazy engagement - community over competition, am I right? But it’s the lack of engagement for the ones showing up here every day, with an actual strategy, a pov and that take time to build their audience that you give no love to. This crap has to be so defeating for anyone that genuinely wants to build something meaningful on this platform. YouTube and TikTok are looking pretty good right now 👀👀👀👀

Ramatu Kandakai, MBA liked thisRamatu Kandakai, MBA liked thisA rare non-AI post. I recently finished my personal quarterly planning, and a friend jokingly told me it was a little... extra. Fair enough. 😊 But I've always had big dreams. And big dreams come with big responsibility. They require planning, honest introspection, measuring progress, and being willing to course-correct quickly. As a wife, mother, eldest daughter, sister, granddaughter, friend, colleague, board member, and community member, life is full. I honestly don't know how people pursue goals that are bigger than themselves without some type of intentional planning system. I'm currently reading a great book that recommends starting with a bold 10-year vision, then working backward through 3-year, 1-year, and 90-day plans. It made me smile because I've been doing exactly that for years without realizing it had a name. I just knew it worked. Looking back, many of the goals I've achieved happened on (or even ahead of) schedule because I built a framework around them: clear goals, measurable milestones, regular reviews, and the discipline to adjust when needed. Is quarterly planning a bit much? Probably. Does it sometimes feel like a chore when I could be doing almost anything else? Absolutely. Would I trade it? Not for a second. The life I'm building isn't just about career success. It's about creating opportunities for my family that I didn't have, opening doors I didn't even know existed, and leaving a legacy of service, leadership, and positive change in my community. Here's to a productive Q3. I hope you accomplish your goals, build something meaningful, and create a legacy that extends far beyond yourself. How do you plan your next move, personally or professionally? And be honest... is quarterly planning too much? 😄 #QuarterlyPlanning #Leadership #GoalSetting #PersonalGrowth #Legacy #StrategicThinking #ContinuousImprovement #Productivity #AILeadership #ArtificialIntelligence #Innovation #WomenInAI #LeadershipDevelopment
